Nantucket Bench
Mere
days before the birth of our twin boys, I finished adding a mudroom
onto our house. In a mudroom, you need someplace to sit to put on your
shoes...hence the need for this bench. Knowing that it would take lots
of abuse, it is made from recycled oak with a few coats of wipe-on poly.
The top is 1" thick, making it considerably more sturdy (and heavier)
than it probably needed to be.
It is my first furniture project made entirely without metal fasteners.
The sides and rails are joined to the top with plate-joinery and the
stretchers join the sides with through-tenons. The plans came from Woodsmith #151, but
the dimensions were altered as well as the joinery - particularly the
number of tenons on the stretcher.
